You Won't Be Alone (2022)
In an isolated mountain village in 19th century Macedonia, a young feral witch accidentally kills a peasant. She assumes the peasant's shape to see what life is like in her skin, igniting a deep seated curiosity to experience life inside the bodies of others.
What people think about You Won't Be Alone
You Won’t Be Alone is the rare horror film that feels like a folk poem—strange, intimate, and quietly breathtaking—using shapeshifting not as a gimmick but as a way to ask what it means to inhabit a life, a body, a moment. Goran Stolevski paints 19th-century Macedonia with earthy beauty and unnerving tactility, where the camera lingers on chores, touch, hunger, and tenderness until the supernatural feels inseparable from the everyday. It’s unsettling and often brutal (the R rating is earned, with graphic gore and sexual violence), but the movie’s real power comes from its deep curiosity and unexpected compassion, as if it’s watching humanity for the first time. If you want jump scares and clean rules, this may not be your ride—but if you’re open to an ambitious, visually hypnotic horror-drama that gets under your skin in a completely original way, it’s hard to shake.
You Won’t Be Alone is clearly aiming for something rarer than a standard horror film: a poetic, body-hopping folktale about identity, desire, and what it means to be human, set against a stark rural backdrop. When it works, it’s hauntingly beautiful and strangely tender, with strong physical performances and an atmosphere that feels ancient and lived-in. But it’s also deliberately slow, repetitive in its episodic structure, and more interested in mood and symbolism than in plot momentum or easy emotional access, which can come off as artsy-for-art’s-sake if you’re not on its wavelength. Add in extremely graphic sexual and bodily violence, and this is one to skip if you want a conventional, fun horror ride or anything remotely light—this is closer to grim, meditative art-horror that asks for patience and a strong stomach.
