Blinded by the Light (2019)

Blinded by the Light is special because it turns a familiar coming-of-age setup into something bracing and personal: a burst of joy and self-discovery set against the gray pressures of Thatcher-era Britain, where music isn’t just a soundtrack but a lifeline. Gurinder Chadha directs with a big, open heart, balancing buoyant comedy and real sting as Javed (a terrific Viveik Kalra) tries to claim his voice while still loving the family and community that shaped him. The vibe is jubilant and crowd-pleasing without being fake, finding poignancy in everyday humiliations and small victories, and letting Springsteen’s lyrics land like private letters you didn’t know you needed. If you’re allergic to earnestness or musical-montage energy, it may feel a bit on-the-nose—but if you want an honest, affecting film that sends you out of the theater standing a little taller, this one delivers.

Blinded by the Light is clearly aiming for an uplifting, crowd-pleasing coming-of-age story about identity, family pressure, and finding your voice in hostile surroundings, with Springsteen as the emotional engine. When it works, the performances are sincere and the cultural specificity gives the story real heart, especially in the family dynamics and the backdrop of 1980s Britain. But the film can lean so hard into feel-good catharsis that it starts to feel engineered, with musical moments and big emotional beats that come off as cheesy or garish rather than genuinely earned. If you’re allergic to earnest, “music-saves-me” inspiration and prefer subtler, messier drama, this one may test your patience—even if you’ll still catch flashes of warmth and charm along the way.
