The Platform (2019)
A slab of food descends down a vertical facility. The residents above eat heartily, leaving those below starving and desperate. A rebellion is imminent.
What people think about The Platform
The Platform is the kind of high-concept thriller that grabs you by the collar and won’t let go, turning a single stark location into a whole society in miniature—equal parts nightmare, dark joke, and moral test. Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia keeps the pacing tight and the tension climbing, while the performances make the desperation feel uncomfortably human rather than merely symbolic. It’s vicious, clever science fiction that doubles as a punchy allegory about scarcity and privilege, delivering shocks that land because the idea is so simple it feels inevitable. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the tone is relentlessly grim, but if you can stomach its brutality, you’ll get a film that’s as provocative as it is propulsive.
The Platform is clearly aiming to be a sharp, high-concept social allegory wrapped in a claustrophobic thriller, and for a while it absolutely delivers that gut-punch premise with real tension. The catch is that the symbolism is about as subtle as a brick, and if you need nuanced characters or a story that evolves beyond its central metaphor, you may find it starts feeling repetitive and preachy as it goes on. It’s also brutally graphic and relentlessly bleak, so anyone sensitive to extreme violence, cannibalism, or sustained despair should steer clear. Still, if you like provocative “thought experiment” sci-fi with striking visuals and you don’t mind an ending that’s more statement than satisfaction, it can be a grimly compelling watch.
