Modest Heroes is special because it finds epic feeling in everyday courage, turning three compact stories into one quietly stirring statement about what it means to be brave when no one’s cheering. Studio Ponoc’s animation shifts beautifully from watery, storybook wonder to tense, grounded realism to a hauntingly modern fable, each segment with its own mood yet all pulling on the same emotional thread. It’s PG, but it doesn’t talk down to you; it lets peril, tenderness, and small acts of defiance land with surprising weight. If you prefer a single, sweeping narrative you may find the anthology format a bit fragmentary, but if you’re open to intimate adventures that linger in the heart, this one earns its title the honest way.

Modest Heroes is clearly trying to be a heartfelt showcase of everyday courage through three very different animated shorts, each with a distinct tone and style. The catch is that anthology films can feel uneven, and here the emotional impact varies segment to segment—if you want one cohesive story with a single buildup and payoff, this may leave you unsatisfied. It also leans more into quiet moments, metaphor, and small-scale stakes (even when there’s peril), so viewers expecting a big fantasy-adventure sweep or lots of action may find it slight. On the upside, the animation craftsmanship is strong and at least one of the stories is likely to hit you personally, but it’s best approached as a sampler of moods rather than a full meal.
