The tone is sleek and contemporary, but still haunted and human, carried by a superb ensemble (Juliet Stevenson and Angus Wright are especially potent) that keeps the relationships sharp and painful rather than merely “classical.” If you want your Shakespeare reverent and traditional, this may feel too immediate; if you’ve ever suspected Hamlet could be thrilling instead of homework, this is the one to prove it.
