Rim of the World (2019)

Rim of the World is a scrappy, crowd-pleasing throwback that taps into that 1980s “kids vs. impossible odds” spirit, then filters it through McG’s brisk, pop-comic energy. The real hook isn’t the alien invasion so much as the way four mismatched teens—awkward, guarded, loud, and unexpectedly brave—start to click as a team, letting the movie land its laughs and heart without getting syrupy. It’s fast, colorful, and character-driven in the best way, the kind of adventure that keeps tossing the group from one messy problem to the next while you end up rooting for them more than you expect. Fair warning: the humor can get raunchier than you’d think for a teen-led romp, and the creature violence occasionally spikes, but if you’re in the mood for a fun, nostalgic sci-fi ride with an easy-to-like ensemble, this one goes down easy.

Rim of the World is clearly aiming for an ’80s-style kid-adventure throwback—misfit campers, big sci-fi stakes, and a road-trip-to-save-the-world setup that wants to feel breezy and heartfelt. The problem is it plays like a checklist of familiar beats with shaky logic and tonal whiplash, bouncing between goofy comedy, sudden brutality, and some surprisingly raunchy moments in a way that doesn’t quite gel. If you’re hoping for real wonder, smart plotting, or characters that grow in a satisfying way, this may feel bland and predictable despite the alien-invasion hook.
