Honey Boy (2019)

Honey Boy is special because it turns a familiar “troubled childhood” story into something rarer: a tender, bruising act of self-understanding that feels lived-in rather than manufactured. Alma Har’el directs with a dreamlike compassion, letting memory, regret, and love blur together in a way that makes the motel rooms and rehab sessions feel like emotional landscapes, not just settings. Shia LaBeouf’s performance (and the rawness of his writing) meets Lucas Hedges and Noah Jupe with an honesty that’s sometimes painful, often funny in a darkly human way, and ultimately disarming in its desire to heal rather than обвинить. It’s also relentlessly heavy—addiction, aggression, and emotional damage are the point—so don’t come in expecting catharsis or uplift. Still, the performances (especially LaBeouf and Noah Jupe) are committed and occasionally disarming, making it worth it if you’re drawn to intimate, uncomfortable character studies and not bothered by a film that’s more confession than story.
