Last Child (2018)

Last Child is the kind of drama-thriller that doesn’t chase tears so much as earn them, patiently observing how grief reshapes a family’s everyday life until it feels like a different world. With a steady, mature hand, it builds tension not from twists, but from the raw, human pressure of unresolved pain and the complicated bond between the bereaved parents and the teenager their son once saved. The lead performances are quietly devastating—grounded, lived-in, and brave enough to let silence speak—giving the film a gritty emotional honesty that lingers long after the credits. Last Child is clearly aiming for a raw, compassionate look at grief and survivor’s guilt, and in its early stretch it genuinely works thanks to strong performances and a grounded, intimate tone. The problem is that the second half pivots hard into heightened melodrama and a more thriller-ish, revenge-leaning direction that doesn’t feel earned, so the emotional realism you bought into starts slipping away. The climax and ending can land as forced rather than cathartic, undermining what the film initially sets up so well. If you want a consistent, quietly devastating drama, you may leave frustrated; if you’re okay with a late-game tonal swerve and more overt emotional beats, there’s still value in the acting and the first half’s sincerity.
