Stree (2018)

Stree is that rare horror-comedy that actually understands both halves of its DNA: it can make you laugh out loud one minute and glance over your shoulder the next, all while feeling rooted in a specific, lived-in place. Amar Kaushik turns the small-town lanes of Chanderi and a viral urban legend into a playful, eerie vibe—equal parts folk tale, buddy caper, and midnight paranoia—powered by sharp writing and crackling dialogue. Rajkummar Rao is effortlessly likable at the center, while Pankaj Tripathi steals scenes with the kind of deadpan wisdom that makes the supernatural feel hilariously mundane. If you want pure horror or broad slapstick, this may not be your exact flavor, but if you enjoy smart genre-mashing with a terrific ensemble, Stree is an easy recommendation.

Stree is clearly trying to mash up small-town folklore horror with cheeky, crowd-pleasing comedy, and when it clicks, it’s genuinely fun and surprisingly atmospheric. The problem is it doesn’t always know whether it wants to scare you, make you laugh, or say something clever, so the tone can wobble and the story starts to feel a bit stretched and loosely stitched together. If you need tight plotting, consistent humor, and clear answers, this one may test your patience with its ambiguity and occasional “wait, what?” writing choices. Still, Rajkummar Rao and Pankaj Tripathi do a lot of heavy lifting, and the premise plus the Chanderi setting give it enough charm that you might forgive the mess if you’re in the mood for a light, spooky ride.
