By the Grace of God (2019)
Alexandre, a man in his 40s living in Lyon with his wife and children, discovers that the priest who abused him decades ago continues to work with children. He joins forces with others victims of the priest, to bring justice and “lift the burden of silence” about what they endured.
What people think about By the Grace of God
By the Grace of God is special because it treats an incendiary true story with rare steadiness and respect, turning outrage into something quieter and more enduring: the hard, human work of speaking up. François Ozon directs with restraint and moral clarity, letting the drama unfold through conversations, letters, and accumulating courage rather than courtroom theatrics, and the result is quietly gripping in the way real life can be when the stakes are spiritual, familial, and deeply personal. Melvil Poupaud, Denis Ménochet, and Swann Arlaud give performances of bruised intelligence and varied pain, making each survivor feel distinct while building a powerful sense of solidarity. It’s a heavy watch—sexual abuse and institutional evasion are discussed throughout—so it won’t be for everyone, but if you can face its subject, the film offers compassion without softness and gravity without sensationalism.
By the Grace of God is clearly trying to do something important: give survivors control of their story and show, step by step, how institutional silence gets protected. François Ozon shoots it in a restrained, almost reportorial way, which makes it feel honest but also means the drama can come off muted, long, and emotionally distant if you’re expecting a more cinematic or cathartic experience. The subject matter is heavy and discussed throughout, so if you’re sensitive to detailed conversations about child sexual abuse and the mechanics of cover-ups, this will likely feel punishing rather than enlightening. Still, the performances are solid and the procedural clarity can be exactly what you want if you prefer sober accountability over melodrama.
