The Chase (2017)

The Chase is the kind of Korean thriller that grabs you by the collar and refuses to let go, not with flashy gimmicks but with the slow, tightening dread of a neighborhood realizing it may be living beside a monster. Director Kim Hong-sun turns a familiar serial-killer premise into something richer by anchoring it in two prickly, lived-in men—an abrasive landlord and a retired detective—whose uneasy alliance becomes the film’s beating heart. The movie’s pleasure is in its atmosphere: cramped apartments, suspicious glances, old secrets resurfacing, and a mystery that feels like it’s been rotting under the floorboards for decades. It does get grisly in places and it’s more grim than fun, but if you like your crime dramas tense, character-driven, and relentlessly propulsive, this one earns your time.

The pacing can also drag when it leans into repetitive mistrust-and-bickering beats, so if you’re expecting a sleek, fast, puzzle-box thriller, you may find it frustrating. Still, if you can handle moderate gore and you like gritty, character-driven procedurals with a dour tone and an older cast doing the heavy lifting, it’s a serviceable watch rather than a must-see.
