The Age of Blood (2017)

The Age of Blood feels like a pressure-cooker historical thriller that just happens to explode into some of the sharpest, most satisfying swordplay you’ll find in recent Korean action cinema. Set almost entirely within the shadowy confines of a Joseon-era prison, it turns torchlit corridors and stone walls into a stage for clean, brutal choreography and striking visuals that keep the tension taut even between clashes. Jung Hae-in is the secret weapon here, bringing a grounded intensity to a role that lets him be more than a pretty face—he makes every choice and every swing feel earned. If you want sweeping palace intrigue, it may feel contained, but if you’re on the fence and crave focused, muscular action with real dramatic weight, this one earns your time.

The Age of Blood is clearly aiming for a gritty, old-school Joseon-era siege thriller, trapping you in a prison with a hero who has to earn back his honor through steel and sacrifice. The problem is the story feels thin and oddly stitched together, with pacing that lurches between setup and swordplay without building much tension or emotional weight. The action comes often but starts to feel repetitive, and the editing plus the obvious CGI blood can make the violence look more staged than brutal. If you’re mainly here for period costumes, a straightforward good-versus-bad showdown, and don’t mind a B-movie vibe, it can pass the time—but if you want tight plotting, believable stakes, or polished filmmaking, this probably isn’t for you.
