Yesterday (2019)
A struggling musician realizes he's the only person on Earth who can remember The Beatles after waking up in an alternate reality where the group was forgotten.
What people think about Yesterday
Yesterday is the kind of high-concept crowd-pleaser that feels like a daydream you don’t want to wake up from: what if the greatest pop songs ever written landed in the hands of an ordinary guy who’s still figuring himself out? Danny Boyle gives the premise a bright, buoyant pulse, while Himesh Patel makes Jack’s sudden rise feel funny, winning, and just uneasy enough to keep it human, especially as Lily James brings a warm ache of romance to the edges of the spotlight. The film’s real magic is how it lets you hear those iconic melodies with fresh ears, not as museum pieces but as sparks that light up rooms, friendships, and choices. It’s a sentimental, music-forward fantasy that won’t be for viewers allergic to wish-fulfillment, but if you’re open to a heartfelt laugh and a few goosebump choruses, it’s an easy movie to love.
Yesterday is trying to be a feel-good “what if?” fantasy about fame, love, and the power of great songs, and when it leans into the music it’s genuinely charming. The problem is that the brilliant premise is mostly used as a cute setup, then the film slides into a fairly conventional rom-com with soft edges and a lot of sentiment where you might be hoping for sharper satire or deeper world-building. The pacing can feel oddly uneven—big moments arrive, then drift—so if you’re here for clever implications and consequences, you may find it frustratingly lightweight. Still, Himesh Patel is likable, the Beatles catalogue does a lot of heavy lifting, and if you just want a warm, easy crowd-pleaser with a romantic core, it’ll probably do the job.
