The Lighthouse (2019)

The Lighthouse is the rare modern film that feels like a feverish folk tale carved out of salt, smoke, and guilt—shot in stark black-and-white that turns every wave and weathered face into something mythic. Robert Eggers directs with uncanny precision, building an atmosphere so thick you can almost taste the kerosene, while Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson deliver performances that are by turns hilarious, ferocious, and quietly heartbreaking as their isolation curdles into obsession. The vibe is a claustrophobic, darkly comic nightmare: part sea shanty, part psychological cage match, with the lighthouse itself looming like a god that refuses to explain its rules. It’s not for everyone—its odd rhythms, abrasive intensity, and unsettling imagery can feel like being trapped in a storm—but if you want a thriller that’s bold, hypnotic, and unlike anything else, this one grips hard and doesn’t let go.

The Lighthouse is clearly aiming for a fever-dream descent into madness, using myth, superstition, and isolation as the real “plot” rather than tidy answers. It’s gorgeously crafted and anchored by two fearless performances, but it’s also deliberately punishing: grim, repetitive, and more interested in mood and symbolism than forward momentum or clear meaning. If you need a coherent story, likable characters, or suspense that pays off in a conventional way, this will feel like two men suffering in circles until you’re suffering with them. If you’re up for an intense, art-house nightmare with striking imagery and no hand-holding, it’s a memorable experience—just not an easy one.
