The Mule is clearly trying to be a late-career Clint Eastwood character study: an old man coasting on charm while slowly facing the wreckage he left behind, wrapped in a crime-story shell. The problem is the shell often feels limp—pacing drifts, the writing can be clunky, and the “thriller” elements rarely build real tension, so long stretches play more like a rambling road movie than a gripping cartel/DEA cat-and-mouse.
