The Mountain (2019)

The Mountain is special because it feels like a dream you can’t quite wake up from—an icy, meticulously composed trip through 1950s America that turns familiar scenery into something quietly menacing. Its images are so stark and precise they don’t just decorate the story, they press on you, creating an unnerving mood that lingers long after a scene ends. Jeff Goldblum is mesmerizing as Dr. Wallace Fiennes, charming and unsettling in the same breath, anchoring the film’s slow-burn power as it circles questions of control, vulnerability, and the stories we tell ourselves in the name of “progress.” This is unapologetically arthouse—deliberate, strange, and emotionally chilly—so it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re drawn to provocative cinema that’s more atmosphere than answers, it’s a hauntingly rewarding watch.

The Mountain is aiming for an icy, art-house meditation on trauma, conformity, and the moral rot behind mid-century “progress,” using the lobotomy tour as a bleak road trip through America’s institutions. It’s beautifully composed and Jeffrey Wright and Jeff Goldblum bring a strange, controlled intensity, but the film moves at a glacial pace and keeps you at arm’s length on purpose. If you need emotional access, narrative momentum, or even a hint of catharsis, this will likely feel punishingly joyless and more like an endurance test than a story. If, however, you’re patient with ambiguity and you like cinema that’s more mood and discomfort than plot, there’s a hypnotic, unsettling pull to it.
