Prospect (2018)

Prospect is the kind of science fiction that feels handmade and lived-in, building an entire frontier economy out of rusted gear, strange slang, and the hush of a deadly forest—proof you don’t need blockbuster spectacle to create real wonder. It plays like a tense, mud-on-your-boots survival western on an alien moon, where every breath matters and every deal carries a price, and the atmosphere is so thick you can practically taste the spores. Sophie Thatcher gives Cee a tough, watchful intelligence that anchors the film, while Pedro Pascal brings a slippery charm and menace that keeps every conversation buzzing with danger. It is violent and occasionally grim, so it’s not for viewers looking for comfort, but if you want immersive world-building and suspense that creeps under your skin, this is a gem worth digging up.

Prospect is clearly aiming for scrappy, lived-in sci-fi: a grimy frontier survival story where the worldbuilding does the heavy lifting and tension comes from scarcity, bad air, and worse people. It mostly succeeds on atmosphere and design, with a strong, charismatic wildcard performance from Pedro Pascal and a setting that feels like it has rules, history, and consequences. But if you need sharp character depth, tight plotting, or a cleanly paced escalation, this can feel more like a mood piece that occasionally forces the story to hit certain beats, especially in the back half. Also, it’s not a cozy adventure—there’s sudden, nasty violence and a few bleak human moments—so if you’re here for wonder and spectacle, you may leave feeling like you paid for a headache in a very pretty helmet.
