Silk Road (2021)

Silk Road is a slick, nervy crime thriller that turns a modern tech fable into a tense, human-scale duel—less about computers than about ego, ideology, and the intoxicating feeling of being untouchable. Tiller Russell keeps the pace tight and the atmosphere edgy, letting the dark humor and mounting paranoia seep in as the walls close from both sides. Jason Clarke is terrific as the volatile, compromised agent who can’t help turning the hunt into something personal, while Nick Robinson makes Ross Ulbricht feel unsettlingly plausible: smart, earnest, and gradually swallowed by his own creation. It’s not a deep-dive procedural and the language and drug content are relentless, but if you want a watchable cat-and-mouse story with bite and momentum, this one hooks you fast.

Silk Road wants to be a slick, ripped-from-the-headlines cat-and-mouse thriller about ideology colliding with real-world consequences, and you can feel it reaching for that bigger conversation. The problem is it often settles for a fairly conventional chase narrative, with character motivations sketched in broad strokes and “true crime” twists that can feel more like screenwriting than lived-in reality. Jason Clarke brings some hard-edged energy and the premise stays watchable in bursts, but the pacing and lack of depth keep it from becoming genuinely gripping or insightful. If you’re hoping for a nuanced deep dive into Ulbricht, the ethics, and the system around him, you may leave feeling like you got a TV-movie version of a much more complicated story.
