Antlers (2021)

Antlers is the kind of horror that earns its chills the old-fashioned way: by sinking you into a rain-soaked Oregon town where grief, poverty, and dread cling to every shadow. It’s gorgeously shot, with images that feel carved out of damp wood and cold light, and it builds an atmosphere so thick you can practically breathe it in before the story ever bares its teeth. When the terror arrives, it’s satisfyingly creature-feature nasty, but what really lingers is the unexpected emotional weight—and the performances, especially Jeremy T. Thomas’s, which give the fear a human pulse. If you want your scares served with mood, craft, and a bruised heart, this one’s worth the trip; if you prefer lighter, jump-scare amusement, it may feel too bleak to cuddle up with.

Antlers clearly wants to be a classy, grief-soaked horror story with a social conscience, and you can see the ambition in its moody Oregon atmosphere and some genuinely unsettling creature work. The problem is it often feels like two movies fighting for control: the allegory is heavy, the horror beats are familiar, and the characters don’t get enough depth to make the emotional side land. The pacing and tone can feel relentlessly dour rather than gripping, building toward a finale that may leave you more deflated than disturbed. If you’re here for bleak visuals and a serious-minded monster movie, it’s worth a look; if you want sharp plotting, memorable character arcs, or a satisfying payoff, you might want to spend your time elsewhere.
