Kate (2021)

Kate is the kind of lean, neon-lit revenge thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, propelled by a ticking-clock urgency and action choreography that’s crisp, brutal, and surprisingly elegant. Mary Elizabeth Winstead anchors the film with a performance that’s all steel and bruised humanity, making every fight feel like it costs something, not just a cool pose in a stylish frame. Director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan gives Tokyo a slick, kinetic glow, keeping the pacing tight while letting an unexpected bond add a sliver of heart amid the mayhem. It’s absolutely not for the squeamish—this is hard-R, bloody and loud—but if you want a fast, well-crafted action-thriller with real attitude and a strong lead, it’s an easy recommendation.

Kate is clearly trying to be a slick, neon-soaked “one last job” revenge sprint with a ticking-clock gimmick and a reluctant surrogate-family bond at its center. The problem is it rarely feels like its own movie: the plot beats are familiar, the twists are easy to see coming, and the writing doesn’t give the characters much to do beyond hitting their marks between fights. Pacing can also feel oddly flat for something set over 24 hours, with stretches that play like connective tissue rather than escalating tension. If you’re mainly here for hard-R action and Mary Elizabeth Winstead selling the physicality with committed, crunchy fight scenes, you’ll get your money’s worth; if you want originality, a sharper thriller hook, or deeper emotional payoff, this may leave you cold.
