It’s not for the squeamish, and it demands attention, but if you want a true-crime drama that feels substantial, urgent, and impeccably acted, this one delivers.

The Traitor is clearly aiming to be a sweeping, serious-minded chronicle of how one insider’s decision helped crack open Cosa Nostra, and it treats the history with weight and restraint rather than flashy gangster glamour. The trade-off is that it can feel sprawling and oddly emotionally cool: you’re watching major events unfold, but the film sometimes keeps you at arm’s length from Buscetta as a person. A big chunk plays like procedural history, with long courtroom stretches and dense faction politics that can test your patience if you want a tighter, more character-driven thriller. If you’re up for a sober, well-acted, detail-heavy Mafia saga (Favino is excellent), it delivers; if you want propulsive pacing and a big dramatic catharsis, this may leave you feeling more informed than moved.
