Stuber (2019)

Stuber is the kind of buddy action-comedy that works because it commits to its central mismatch: Dave Bautista’s granite-jawed, barely-seeing cop and Kumail Nanjiani’s anxious, ratings-obsessed Uber driver make a genuinely funny duo, with banter that feels quick, human, and surprisingly warm. Director Michael Dowse keeps the day-in-hell momentum humming through stakeouts, chases, and sudden bursts of mayhem, so the laughs land not in spite of the action but because of it. It’s loud, R-rated, and gleefully chaotic, the sort of movie that knows exactly when to let a punchline breathe and when to slam the gas. If you don’t like crude language or comedic violence, it may be a rough ride—but if you miss the simple pleasure of two performers sparking off each other in a high-energy romp, this one delivers.

Stuber is trying to be a buddy-cop throwback with a modern twist: a tough-as-nails cop and a painfully polite Uber driver stuck together for one long, chaotic day. When it works, it’s because Dave Bautista and Kumail Nanjiani have likable chemistry and a few bits land with real charm. But the plot is thin and predictable, the pacing lurches between jokes and shootouts, and the violence is more frequent (and nastier) than the breezy premise suggests, which can make the comedy feel forced rather than fun. If you want a tight action-comedy with clever set pieces and sharp writing, this may feel undercooked; if you’re happy to coast on the two leads and don’t mind crude language and bloodier action, it’s an easy enough one-night watch.
