Searching (2018)
After David Kim's 16-year-old daughter goes missing, a local investigation is opened and a detective is assigned to the case. But 37 hours later and without a single lead, David decides to search the one place no one has looked yet, where all secrets are kept today: his daughter's laptop.
What people think about Searching
Searching is one of those rare thrillers that feels genuinely modern without leaning on gimmicks: the entire mystery unfolds through screens, clicks, and half-glimpsed digital lives, turning everyday apps into a pulse-quickening detective story. John Cho gives a quietly devastating performance as a father whose panic sharpens into obsession, and the film’s editing keeps you leaning forward as each new detail reframes what you thought you knew. It’s tense and propulsive, but it also lands an emotional punch about grief and how little we sometimes know the people we love, even when we share a home. If you’re allergic to “screenlife” storytelling it may take a few minutes to adjust, but once it hooks you, it’s hard to look away.
Searching is clearly trying to modernize the missing-person thriller by telling the whole story through laptops, texts, and social media, and it mostly succeeds at keeping the tension high. The catch is that the “screenlife” format can feel like a clever stunt rather than a natural way to tell a story, and if you find staring at desktops and chat windows visually dull, you may get restless even when the plot is moving. It’s also emotionally heavy, dealing with grief and a teen in danger, so it’s not exactly a cozy watch. Still, John Cho grounds it with a genuinely human performance, and if you enjoy twisty mysteries that reward close attention to details, this is one of the better executions of the gimmick.
