Marriage Story (2019)

Marriage Story is special because it turns a familiar heartbreak into something startlingly alive: a compassionate, sharply observed look at how love can persist even as a relationship falls apart. Noah Baumbach’s writing has the clean sting of truth—funny in the way real life can be funny at the worst possible moment—while his direction gives every pause and sideways glance the weight of history. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are extraordinary together, not playing villains or saints but two fully human people trying to be seen, and Laura Dern adds a bracing jolt of wit and steel to the proceedings. It’s an intense, talky, emotionally raw drama (and the language is definitely R-rated), so it may not be the pick for a light night in—but if you want a film that feels honest, tender, and deeply affecting, it’s absolutely worth the time.

Marriage Story is aiming for an intimate, painfully human look at how two decent people can turn into enemies once the legal machine gets involved, and it largely succeeds on the strength of sharp writing and two powerhouse lead performances. That said, if you struggle to care about affluent, culturally cushioned characters having exquisitely articulated breakdowns, the film can feel like well-crafted misery tourism with a blind spot for class and real-world stakes. It’s also talky and emotionally relentless, building to raw confrontations that may feel either cathartic or manipulative depending on your tolerance for heightened, theatrical realism. Watch it if you want adult drama that’s honest about ugliness and still finds tenderness; skip it if you’re looking for subtlety, levity, or a perspective that reaches beyond the bubble these characters live in.
