The Old Guard (2020)

The Old Guard takes the familiar fantasy of immortality and treats it less like a gimmick than a burden, giving you a sleek action movie that still carries real emotional weight. Gina Prince-Bythewood directs with clarity and purpose, staging fights that feel bruising and precise while keeping the camera interested in faces, loyalties, and the quiet exhaustion of people who’ve lived too long. Charlize Theron is terrific as a battle-worn leader whose toughness has edges of sorrow, and KiKi Layne brings a grounded, human spark that pulls you into this strange world without a lecture. It’s violent and occasionally grim, so it won’t be for everyone, but if you want an action-fantasy that has craftsmanship and soul—not just noise—this one earns your time.

The Old Guard is clearly aiming for slick, mythic superhero-adjacent action with a surprisingly earnest heart, anchored by Charlize Theron’s no-nonsense presence and a cool immortality premise. The problem is it often plays like a setup for something better: lots of lore and franchise chess moves, with stretches of talky exposition that slow the momentum between fights. If you’re allergic to familiar “team assembles, corporation hunts them” plotting, or you want the fantasy elements to feel truly strange rather than neatly packaged, this may leave you underwhelmed. Still, the action is competently staged, the central relationships have warmth, and when it leans into the tragedy of living forever, it briefly becomes the sharper movie it wants to be.
