Judy (2019)

Judy is special because it treats a legend not as a monument, but as a living, aching human being—someone who can still light up a room even as the light costs her. Renée Zellweger doesn’t simply imitate Judy Garland; she inhabits her with a raw, trembling intimacy that makes the musical numbers feel less like “performances” and more like acts of survival, each note carrying history. Rupert Goold keeps the vibe wintry and close-quartered, balancing backstage grit with flashes of warmth from fans and friends who understand what Judy means to them. It’s an emotionally heavy film about talent, exploitation, and endurance, so it may not be the choice for a breezy night in—but if you want a drama that sings and breaks your heart in the same breath, it’s hard to shake.

Judy is clearly aiming for an intimate, late-career portrait of Judy Garland—equal parts backstage showbiz and the cost of a lifetime of exploitation—and it mostly succeeds when it lets the performances do the talking. The problem is the film leans hard on well-worn biopic beats (the trauma, the pills, the collapse, the comeback), so if you’ve seen a few “tortured icon” stories, a lot of this will feel familiar and a bit grey. Renée Zellweger is the main reason to watch: she’s magnetic, vulnerable, and convincingly musical, even when the surrounding scenes feel like they’re just moving you to the next breakdown. If you want a brisk, celebratory music movie, this isn’t it; it’s a somber, sometimes repetitive character study that rewards viewers who can sit with discomfort and sadness.
