StarDog and TurboCat (2019)

StarDog and TurboCat is the kind of bright, bouncy family adventure that wins you over on sheer charm: a loyal, wide-eyed dog with unexpected powers paired with a slick, self-appointed vigilante cat who’s equal parts cool and ridiculous. The animation keeps things colorful and kinetic, and the movie’s little world—where pets have to be clever to get by—adds just enough texture to make the chase feel like more than noise and speed. Luke Evans brings a surprisingly confident spark to Felix, while Nick Frost makes Buddy’s earnestness feel genuinely sweet, so the jokes land because you care who’s telling them. It does lean heavily into slapstick mayhem and cartoon insults, so if you’re sensitive to that, fair warning—but if you want a warm, goofy buddy-comedy with heart under the chaos, this one’s easy to root for.

StarDog and TurboCat is clearly aiming for a breezy buddy-adventure about friendship and finding home, with a superhero twist and a kid-friendly, Saturday-morning-cartoon energy. The problem is the execution: the script feels thin and noisy, leaning hard on bickering, slapstick pain, and “idiot/moron” style put-downs instead of sharper jokes or real character growth, so it can come off flat and a bit relentless. If you’re expecting Pixar-level warmth, cleverness, or polished world-building, this will likely disappoint, and the frequent cartoon violence (including electrocutions and crashes) may be more intense than you’d want for sensitive kids. Still, the voice cast is game and the central cat-and-dog pairing has enough charm to work as a low-stakes distraction for families who don’t mind broad humor and simple storytelling.
