Nothing to Hide (2018)

Nothing to Hide takes an irresistibly simple idea—put everyone’s phone on the table and read every message out loud—and turns it into a deliciously tense, sharply funny pressure cooker that feels uncomfortably close to real life. Fred Cavayé keeps the tone nimble, letting the laughter catch in your throat as the evening’s easy banter curdles into revelations, and the terrific cast (especially Bérénice Bejo) makes every glance and half-smile feel loaded. It’s the kind of talky, one-location drama-comedy that thrives on smart writing and the slow tightening of emotional screws, watching friendships and marriages strain in ways that are messy, human, and hard to look away from. If you don’t enjoy conversational films or cringe-inducing social discomfort, it may feel too prickly—but if you like your comedy laced with bite and your drama fueled by razor-clean observation, this one is a compulsive watch.

Nothing to Hide wants to be a sharp, modern dinner-party pressure cooker about the lies we store in our phones, and for a while it delivers that addictive “can’t look away” tension as secrets spill in real time. The problem is it often feels like a clever setup doing the heavy lifting, with characters serving the next reveal more than a deeper, messier exploration of why they’re all so broken. If you’re hoping for a genuinely insightful drama-comedy with a landing that reframes everything, the ending and twist may leave you feeling a bit sold short. Still, if you enjoy contained, talky ensembles and social-disaster storytelling where the fun is watching the facade crack, it’s a solid one-night watch.
