The Oath (2018)

The Oath is the kind of comedy-thriller that sneaks up on you: it starts as a painfully recognizable Thanksgiving gathering and tightens into a nervy, darkly funny pressure-cooker about what politics can do to people who still have to pass the gravy. Its satire is sharp without feeling smug, finding true-to-life laughs in the way decent intentions curdle into tribal reflexes, and it keeps the tension humming with the pace of a home-invasion movie set inside a family argument. There’s a clever, timely bite to how it captures hyper-partisan language and loyalty tests, making the absurd feel uncomfortably plausible.
