Batman Ninja (2018)
Batman, along with many of his allies and adversaries, finds himself transported to feudal Japan by Gorilla Grodd's time displacement machine.
What people think about Batman Ninja
Batman Ninja is what happens when a wild comic-book “what if?” gets the full-throttle love of top-tier anime craft: it’s Batman hurled into feudal Japan, and the movie commits to the idea with fearless style, painterly character designs, and action that moves like a symphony of blades, capes, and pure momentum. The tone is deliriously inventive—part samurai spectacle, part superhero operetta—where every scene seems determined to outdo the last in visual imagination, backed by a score that makes the whole mash-up feel strangely mythic. It’s not the Batman movie you watch for grounded realism or detective brooding; it’s the one you watch when you want to see the Dark Knight reinterpreted with maximal flair, playful villainy, and animation that practically crackles off the screen. If you’re on the fence, know this: even when it’s gloriously over-the-top, it’s over-the-top with purpose, and it’s hard not to admire a film that swings this big and lands so many of its blows.
Batman Ninja is clearly trying to be a wild mash-up of DC iconography and feudal Japan anime spectacle, and on that level it’s loud, stylish, and unapologetically weird. The problem is the story and direction often feel like they’re sprinting past coherence, piling on new ideas and power-ups without earning them, so if you want tight plotting or smart character work, you’ll likely be irritated. It plays more like a nonstop visual flex than a meaningful Batman tale, with the Joker and company used as flashy pieces rather than properly written threats. If you’re in the mood for over-the-top animation, samurai aesthetics, and “just go with it” insanity, it can be fun; if you’re hoping for grounded Batman storytelling, save your time.
