Little Monsters (2019)

Little Monsters is that rare zombie comedy with a real pulse: it’s nasty when it needs to be, but it’s also strangely sweet, powered by Lupita Nyong’o’s radiant, unshakable charm as a teacher who turns terror into a “game” to keep her kids calm. Abe Forsythe stages the mayhem with brisk energy and a mischievous sense of timing, letting the laughs land without deflating the horror, while Alexander England’s lovable mess of a musician and Josh Gad’s gloriously obnoxious kids-TV star add just the right notes of cringe and heart. The vibe is rowdy, romantic, and crowd-pleasing in a midnight-movie way—think splattery undead chaos colliding with earnest caretaking and surprisingly tender moments. Fair warning: it’s aggressively R-rated with heavy gore and filthy language, but if you can handle the blood and bad behavior, it’s one of the most purely fun zombie rides of the decade.

Little Monsters wants to mash up a sweet “protect the kids at all costs” story with a nasty, blood-splattered zombie comedy, and when it clicks you can see the clever movie it’s reaching for. Lupita Nyong’o is the clear saving grace—warm, funny, and committed enough to make the premise feel almost charming—while Josh Gad leans into obnoxious-showman energy that some will find hilarious and others will find unbearable. The problem is the film’s tone and pacing are uneven: it bounces between heartfelt beats, gross-out gore, and crude humor in a way that can feel predictable and emotionally pre-packaged rather than sharp. If you’re hoping for a consistently smart satire or genuinely scary horror, this may disappoint, but if you’re fine with a messy mix of R-rated splatter and occasional big laughs carried by a great lead performance, it’s serviceable.
