Dog Days (2018)

Dog Days is the kind of sunny, big-hearted ensemble comedy that sneaks up on you: it looks like a simple “cute dogs” premise, then steadily wins you over with genuine warmth and a surprisingly steady stream of laughs. Set in a breezy Los Angeles where everyone’s a little lonely and a little hopeful, it stitches together several lives through the small, chaos-making miracles pets bring—nudging people into second chances, new friendships, and romantic sparks. Ken Marino keeps the vibe light and genial, letting a likable cast (Nina Dobrev, Vanessa Hudgens, Adam Pally) play off the easy charm of the canine co-stars without turning the movie into pure fluff. It’s not for anyone allergic to sentimental, feel-good storytelling, but if you want a pleasant, comforting watch that leaves you smiling, this one earns its belly rubs.

Dog Days is clearly trying to be a sunny, feel-good ensemble rom-com where dogs act as the glue between a bunch of lonely or messy L.A. lives, and it mostly aims for comfort over surprise. The problem is it leans hard on familiar sitcom-level tropes, so the human storylines can feel thin and oddly rushed, like you’re watching a highlight reel of meet-cutes and life lessons rather than people you truly buy. It also pushes sentiment pretty aggressively, including a tear-jerker turn that may feel earned if you’re a dog lover, but manipulative if you’re not in the mood to be nudged. If you want low-stakes, PG, puppy-powered sweetness with a likable cast, it’ll do the job; if you’re hoping for sharp comedy, fresh romance, or anything remotely realistic, you’ll probably find it too fluffy.
