Nightmare Cinema (2018)

Nightmare Cinema is a love letter to the dark magic of going to the movies, where the screen doesn’t just entertain you—it studies you, then bites back. Set inside a rotting old theater ruled by Mickey Rourke’s wonderfully eerie Projectionist, it plays like a haunted mixtape: five mini-nightmares from five directors, each with its own flavor, from operatic gore to queasy surrealism, all stitched together with a pulpy, midnight-movie grin. The production value is far better than you’d expect from an anthology, and the sheer variety keeps the dread fresh even when you think you’ve figured out the rhythm. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone who needs tidy explanations, but if you miss the wicked fun of old-school horror anthologies with modern teeth, this is a ticket worth buying.

Nightmare Cinema is clearly trying to be a love letter to horror anthologies, using a creepy theater and Mickey Rourke’s ghostly Projectionist to stitch together five fear-themed shorts from a stacked lineup of directors. The problem is the same one that sinks a lot of anthologies: the segments are wildly uneven, with a few strong images and ideas surrounded by clunky writing, abrupt tonal shifts, and shocks that lean more on gore than genuine, lingering dread. The wraparound story sounds great on paper but doesn’t quite land with the weight or momentum it needs, so the whole thing can feel like a sampler platter where you’re waiting for a standout that may or may not arrive. If you enjoy variety, practical nastiness, and don’t mind “hit-or-miss” storytelling, you’ll find moments to appreciate; if you want a cohesive, consistently scary film, this probably isn’t your night at the movies.
