Freaks Out (2021)

Freaks Out is clearly aiming for a big, strange, heartfelt mash-up of superhero origin story, circus outsider fable, and WWII nightmare set in Rome, and you can feel the ambition in its visuals and world-building. The problem is it often plays like several movies fighting for control, with a story that wanders, a tone that lurches, and set pieces that feel more like spectacle than momentum. It’s also long, and if you’re not fully on board with its heightened, occasionally tasteless carnival energy, that runtime can turn into a slog.
