Minnal Murali (2021)

Minnal Murali feels special because it takes the familiar thrill of superhero mythology and plants it firmly in the soil of a small Kerala town, where capes and consequences share the same narrow streets. Basil Joseph keeps the tone buoyant and funny without undercutting the emotion, letting the comedy arise from character and community rather than cheap winks at the genre. Tovino Thomas is effortlessly likable as a very human would-be hero, while Guru Somasundaram brings surprising depth and menace to the opposing force, making the conflict feel personal instead of purely flashy. The score and VFX punch above their weight, delivering real spectacle, but the movie’s best superpower is its heart—though if you prefer grim, hyper-serious superhero stories, this one’s warm, playful vibe may not be your flavor.

Minnal Murali is clearly trying to be Kerala’s homegrown superhero origin story—lighthearted, heartfelt, and proudly local—and when it leans into that small-town charm, it’s genuinely fun. The problem is it often stretches its plot like a rubber band, with pacing that sags and a script that falls back on familiar comic-book beats and convenient turns rather than surprising you. If you’re allergic to cliché training-montage energy, broad comedy, or a movie that takes its time getting to the “superhero” part, this may test your patience. But if you’re up for an earnest, community-driven spin on the genre with a likable lead and some solid action moments, it’s an easy enough ride—just don’t expect tight storytelling or a radically fresh premise.
