Ever After (2019)

Ever After makes the apocalypse feel strangely alive, turning a familiar zombie premise into something lyrical, intimate, and quietly unnerving, where the real suspense comes from watching two very different women learn how to survive each other as much as the world around them. Carolina Hellsgård directs with a sure hand for mood, letting lush, overgrown landscapes and dreamlike imagery creep under your skin until the boundary between horror and dark fantasy starts to blur. It’s less about body counts than about atmosphere, grief, and the fragile comfort of companionship when everything else has fallen away. If you want fast, quippy action-horror, this may feel too meditative—but if you’re on the fence and craving a genre film with originality and haunting visual poetry, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Ever After (2019) is aiming for a moody, apocalyptic two-hander that mixes zombie survival with a dreamy, nature-is-reclaiming-the-world kind of fantasy, and it clearly wants the relationship between Vivi and Eva to be the real engine. The problem is it often drifts instead of drives: pacing is uneven, the narrative feels thin, and the symbolic, hallucinatory stretches can smother tension rather than build it. If you’re coming for tight scares, clear rules, and a propulsive “get to the safe city” thriller, this may feel abstract and underdeveloped. But if you’re up for a melancholic, atmospheric road movie where emotion and imagery matter more than plot mechanics, there are moments of intimacy and eerie world-building that land.
