Batman: Gotham by Gaslight (2018)
In an alternative Victorian Age Gotham City, Batman begins his war on crime while he investigates a new series of murders by Jack the Ripper.
What people think about Batman: Gotham by Gaslight
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is a deliciously macabre “what if?” that drops the Dark Knight into a fog-choked Victorian Gotham where gaslamps flicker, alleyways feel dangerous, and every shadow looks like it could be hiding a monster. It plays like a murder mystery first and a superhero story second, letting the investigation and paranoia build until the city itself feels complicit—while still delivering brisk, stylish action when Batman finally collides with the night’s worst impulses. The animation leans into a grim, steampunk-tinged elegance, and the voice cast (especially Bruce Greenwood and Jennifer Carpenter) gives the characters a lived-in bite that suits the era. Fair warning: it’s darker and more vicious than some Batman outings, but if you want a creepy, atmospheric spin on the mythos with a genuine whodunit hook, this one earns its candlelit chills.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is clearly trying to mash up Batman’s early crime-fighting days with a Victorian Jack the Ripper mystery, and on paper that’s a deliciously grim idea. In practice, it often settles for “adult” atmosphere—blood, sleaze, and shock beats—when you’re hoping for a smarter detective story or richer alternate-history worldbuilding, so the setting can feel more like window dressing than a fully lived-in Gotham. The animation and voice work are solid, and there are a few genuinely moody set pieces that scratch the steampunk itch, but the plot’s twists and character choices may frustrate you if you want faithful comic adaptation or tighter logic. If you’re sensitive to sexualized content and grisly violence, or you want a cerebral thriller rather than a pulpy, edgy remix, this one may be more style than substance for your time.
