Liverleaf (2018)
The story follows Nozaki Haruka, a middle school student who transfers to a new school in a small town because of her father's work. Unfortunately, she becomes a victim of horrific bullying, but since the school will be closing in 2 months after graduation, no one is willing to help her.
What people think about Liverleaf
Liverleaf is the kind of revenge horror that doesn’t just aim to shock you—it seduces you with a cold, controlled sense of style, turning small-town hallways and winter landscapes into a vivid, nightmarish stage. Eisuke Naito shoots the story with an almost classical eye, letting the cruelty of bullying and the slow boil of anger hang in the air until the film becomes less a thriller than a grim, operatic reckoning. Anna Yamada anchors it with a fierce, haunted presence, making the descent feel emotionally rooted even when the imagery goes to extremes. Fair warning: this is relentlessly graphic and not for the squeamish, but if you can stomach its brutality, you’ll find a visually striking, unapologetically intense film that understands exactly why revenge stories can feel both horrifying and irresistibly cathartic.
Liverleaf is clearly aiming for a bleak anti-bullying revenge tragedy, pushing the idea that cruelty ignored by adults breeds something monstrous in return. The problem is it drags its feet for a long stretch, so the misery can start to feel repetitive rather than escalating, and when the gore finally hits, it’s so relentless that it risks becoming numbing instead of shocking. Some effects look rough and a few performances and lines land awkwardly, which can undercut the seriousness it’s reaching for. If you want a tight, psychologically sharp thriller, this likely isn’t it—but if you can handle extreme violence and you’re in the mood for a grim, over-the-top revenge marathon, there are moments of nasty intensity that deliver exactly that.
