Deep Blue Sea 2 (2018)

Deep Blue Sea 2 knows exactly what it is: a slick, pulpy underwater pressure-cooker where science goes too far and nature collects the bill with teeth. It wastes no time dropping you into a claustrophobic sea facility, then keeps tightening the screws with brisk pacing, sharp creature-feature suspense, and a satisfyingly nasty streak of R-rated shark mayhem. Danielle Savre gives the film a grounded center as a conservationist caught between ethics and survival, while the movie’s clean, industrial setting and cold corporate arrogance lend it a fun, grimy sci-fi edge. If you’re squeamish about gore or want subtle horror, steer clear—but if you’re on the fence and craving a lean, loud, unapologetic shark thriller, this one delivers the carnage with conviction.

Deep Blue Sea 2 is clearly trying to deliver a slick, high-stakes “smart sharks in a sealed facility” ride with some eco-science guilt and a bigger body count, and on paper that’s perfectly fine. The problem is it plays like a bargain-bin echo of the original: the pacing drags, the logic is wobbly even by monster-movie standards, and the tension rarely builds into anything genuinely exciting. If you’re hoping for sharp characters, clever set pieces, or that “this is ridiculous but fun” energy, you’ll probably feel your time being wasted. Still, if all you want is R-rated shark carnage with a few nasty gore moments and you’re not picky about production value or story coherence, it can function as background creature-feature noise.
