Zygote (2017)

Zygote is the kind of sci-fi horror that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, delivering big-screen production value in a tight, brutal package. Set against the dead-white isolation of an Arctic mining facility, it builds dread through crisp, industrial visuals and a creature design so unnervingly tactile you’ll feel it in your teeth. Dakota Fanning and Jose Pablo Cantillo sell the terror with grounded, human performances—less movie-hero swagger, more raw survival instinct—which makes every close call hit harder. It’s intense and merciless rather than slow and philosophical, so if you want a swift, expertly crafted nightmare with unforgettable effects, this one’s absolutely worth your time.

Zygote is trying to deliver a tight, high-concept survival horror set in an icy mining outpost, and it mostly banks on atmosphere and creature terror rather than deep storytelling. The problem is the short runtime makes everything feel rushed: the plot sprints through key beats, the characters don’t get much room to become people you care about, and the exposition can land clunkily. Some dialogue also comes off muddled or uneven, which doesn’t help when the film is already leaning on familiar sci‑fi horror DNA you’ve probably seen done elsewhere.
