What people think about Satan's Slaves
Satan’s Slaves is the kind of horror that doesn’t just startle you—it slowly tightens its grip, using grief and family bonds as the fuse for something truly unnerving. Joko Anwar builds dread with patient, confident pacing, letting the house’s shadows, the rural stillness, and the film’s richly Indonesian occult flavor do as much work as any jump scare, until the tension feels like it’s living in the walls. The craftsmanship is terrific: moody visuals, precise sound design, and a steady escalation that keeps you leaning forward even when you want to look away. It’s not for viewers who avoid intense supernatural imagery or stories involving children in danger, but if you want a haunting that feels both classic and culturally specific, this one delivers in full.
Satan’s Slaves wants to be a slow-burn, old-school haunted-house mystery that gradually widens into something bigger and more occult, and for a good stretch it absolutely nails the dread, atmosphere, and period grime. The problem is that the pacing and structure can feel uneven, and when the story finally goes loud, the ending risks turning chaotic rather than clarifying what you’ve been building toward. Performances are serviceable but not consistently strong enough to carry the quieter stretches, so if you need character depth as much as scares, you may find yourself checking your watch. If you’re here for relentless, creepy set pieces and unsettling imagery (including danger involving kids), it’s worth your time; if you want a tight mystery with a clean payoff, this might frustrate you.
