Angel of Mine (2019)

Angel of Mine is the kind of thriller that gets under your skin not with cheap shocks, but with a steady, intimate dread that feels heartbreakingly human. Kim Farrant directs with a sure hand, turning everyday spaces—birthday parties, family homes, polite conversations—into pressure cookers, while Noomi Rapace gives a raw, riveting performance that makes you understand Lizzie’s grief even as you fear where it might lead. Yvonne Strahovski is equally compelling as the mother on the other side of the story, and the film’s tension comes from watching two lives begin to orbit the same child with very different truths at stake. It’s a slow-burn, emotionally intense mystery more than a twist-machine, but if you like domestic dramas that tighten into something haunting and ultimately cathartic, this one earns your attention.

Angel of Mine is clearly aiming for a tense, grief-soaked psychological mystery about a mother so shattered by loss that she clings to the impossible. The problem is it often mistakes mood for momentum: the pacing is sluggish, the plotting feels undercooked, and the suspense rarely escalates to the level its premise teases, with a score that can feel like it’s doing the heavy lifting. Noomi Rapace commits hard and keeps it watchable, and there are a few unsettling moments of intrusion that land, but the execution and ending may leave you feeling more deflated than thrilled. If you want a tightly wound, twisty thriller with big payoffs, this likely isn’t it; if you’re okay with a slow-burn character study that leans on performance over narrative fireworks, you might still get something out of it.
