Semper Fi (2019)

Semper Fi stands out because it treats its high-stakes premise less like a flashy action gimmick and more like a bruised, human test of loyalty—what you owe your family, your brothers-in-arms, and your own moral code. Henry Alex Rubin keeps the camera close to the characters, letting the tension build through lived-in friendships, small-town history, and the kind of camaraderie that feels earned rather than scripted. Jai Courtney anchors the film with a convincingly torn center, while Nat Wolff and Finn Wittrock help give the group’s bond real weight, so even the most extreme choices play like desperate extensions of love and damage. It’s gritty, profane, and emotionally raw, and if you’re looking for a clean-cut hero story you may bristle—but if you want an action-drama with heart, consequences, and performances that stick, this one is easy to recommend.

Semper Fi clearly wants to be a grounded, blue-collar drama about brotherhood, PTSD, and moral compromise, then pivot into a tense prison-break thriller powered by loyalty. The problem is that the gears don’t mesh: the character-driven setup feels more believable than the later “no matter what the cost” plan, and the shift can make the story seem contrived rather than inevitable. Pacing and structure are uneven, so moments that should land emotionally get rushed while the thriller mechanics ask you to swallow a lot of convenient turns. If you’re here for a realistic cop/military drama, this may frustrate you, but if you can accept a heightened, messy-but-sincere ride, the performances (especially Jai Courtney) and the camaraderie give it some punch.
