The Swordsman (2020)

The Swordsman earns its place among modern action standouts by marrying elegantly brutal bladework to a surprisingly tender, human heartbeat: a father who’s running out of time and vision, but not resolve. Choi Jae-hoon stages the fights with crisp clarity and old-world heft, letting every slash feel earned, while the Joseon-era textures and political menace give the film a handsome, lived-in historical weight. Jang Hyuk carries it with a weathered intensity, and Joe Taslim brings a cold, predatory energy that sharpens the stakes without tipping into cartoon villainy. It’s swift, cleanly told, and deeply satisfying if you want your martial-arts cinema to look gorgeous and hit hard—though if you’re sensitive to violence and grim subject matter, it doesn’t soften the edges.

The Swordsman is clearly aiming for a classic, emotionally charged “retired warrior forced back into violence” tale, wrapped in Joseon-era politics and a rescue mission with high stakes. When it works, it’s because Jang Hyuk sells the weary-dad desperation, and the swordplay has flashes of crisp, satisfying brutality. But the direction and editing often feel oddly flat and choppy, so scenes that should land with tension or clarity can come off rushed, derivative, or unintentionally confusing. If you’re expecting the polish and momentum of top-tier Korean historical action, you may leave disappointed; if you just want a straightforward revenge-rescue story with intermittent strong fights and don’t mind rough filmmaking around the edges, it’s serviceable.
