Kedarnath (2018)

Kedarnath has that rare sweep where a love story feels inseparable from the place it’s set in—the Himalayas aren’t just scenery here, they’re a living presence, captured with a reverence that makes every frame breathe. Abhishek Kapoor builds a romance that’s tender and volatile in equal measure, anchored by Sushant Singh Rajput’s quiet sincerity and Sara Ali Khan’s strikingly confident debut, their chemistry making even small glances feel charged. The music and soundscape do a lot of emotional heavy lifting, turning the film into something you don’t just watch so much as sink into. It does lean into classic Bollywood melodrama and big feelings, so if you prefer romance that stays understated you may resist it—but if you’re open to a heartfelt, visually stunning journey, this one earns its tears.

Kedarnath clearly wants to be a sweeping, spiritual romance set against a real tragedy, and at its best it captures the harsh beauty of the pilgrimage and the tenderness of its central bond. The problem is it leans hard on familiar star-crossed-love beats, so if you’re allergic to predictable plotting and melodrama, you’ll feel the gears turning long before the film gets where it’s headed. The pacing can be uneven and the tone wobbles between intimate love story and disaster spectacle, which makes the flood portions feel more like a device than a fully earned escalation. Still, Sushant Singh Rajput brings quiet sincerity, Sara Ali Khan has spark, and if you want emotional comfort food with scenic atmosphere, it may land even when the writing doesn’t.
