Eighth Grade (2018)
Thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school — the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year — before she begins high school.
What people think about Eighth Grade
Eighth Grade is something rare: a movie that captures modern adolescence with such pinpoint honesty it feels less like a story and more like a memory you didn’t know you still carried. Bo Burnham directs with a comedian’s timing and a humanist’s tenderness, letting the awkward silences, social-media noise, and tiny humiliations land without mocking Kayla for any of it. Elsie Fisher is astonishingly natural—funny, raw, and achingly recognizable—and the film’s warmth, especially in the father-daughter moments, gives the anxiety a beating heart instead of just a punchline. Fair warning, it can be intensely cringe-inducing and includes strong language and a tense, uncomfortable sequence, but if you can sit with that truthfulness, it’s one of the most compassionate coming-of-age films in years.
Eighth Grade is clearly trying to bottle that painfully specific, phone-glued anxiety of being 13, and it nails the awkwardness so accurately it can feel like a stress test. Bo Burnham’s direction and Elsie Fisher’s performance are strong, but the story often leans on familiar coming-of-age beats and a few characters can feel more like types than fully lived-in people. It also isn’t a “fun” comedy-drama so much as an uncomfortably real one, with frequent strong language, sexual talk, and a tense pressure-filled scene that may hit too close to home. If you want a breezy, uplifting teen movie, this will feel heavy and a bit predictable; if you can handle secondhand embarrassment and want something honest with a genuinely tender father-daughter core, it’s worth the discomfort.
