Destination Wedding (2018)

Destination Wedding is a rom-com for people who think they’re done with rom-coms: tart, talky, and unexpectedly swoony, powered almost entirely by the wickedly good chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder. The movie’s special pleasure is watching two sharp-tongued, emotionally bruised strangers circle each other with weaponized honesty, turning every exchange into a little duel that somehow becomes charming instead of cruel. It has an airy, slightly unreal weekend-away vibe—like the world has been turned down so their banter and guarded longing can take center stage—and it’s consistently delightful in how confidently it commits to that minimalist, unconventional approach. If you need big set pieces or broad slapstick, it may feel too dry, but if you like romance with bite and a unique rhythm, this one sneaks up on you and wins.

Destination Wedding is aiming for a sharp, talky anti-rom-com where two wounded cynics spar their way toward something resembling connection, and it commits hard to that vibe. The catch is the dialogue can feel aggressively overwritten and the tone so sour and mean-spirited that what’s meant to be witty starts to grate, especially if you’re hoping for warmth or escapism.
