At Eternity's Gate (2018)

At Eternity’s Gate is special because it doesn’t try to “explain” Van Gogh so much as let you inhabit his senses, turning the act of seeing into something urgent and alive. Willem Dafoe gives a mesmerizing performance that feels less like an impersonation and more like a raw, compassionate encounter with a man burning to translate the world into color. The film’s textured, artistic style—restless camera, natural light, moments of quiet rapture—creates a vibe that’s intimate and almost dreamlike, as if you’re walking beside him through fields and silence. It’s not a conventional biopic and it can feel impressionistic rather than plot-driven, but if you’re open to an empathetic drama that treats creativity as both salvation and torment, it’s quietly unforgettable.

At Eternity’s Gate is clearly aiming for a subjective, inside-the-mind portrait of Van Gogh, more mood poem than biopic, and it does commit to that vision. The problem is the film can feel self-consciously “artistic,” with shaky, restless camerawork and a drifting structure that may come off as aimless rather than immersive. If you want a coherent narrative arc, clear supporting characters, or a satisfying sense of progression, this can be a frustrating sit. Still, Willem Dafoe’s performance is intensely committed, and if you’re happy to sink into atmosphere and emotion over plot, you may find it quietly affecting.
