Hunt (2022)

Hunt is the kind of sleek, nerve-tight thriller that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, marrying propulsive action with a constantly shifting mystery set against the paranoia of 1980s South Korea. Lee Jung-jae’s directorial debut has the confidence of a veteran: stylish, sharply paced, and shot with a cool, controlled elegance that makes every shadowy hallway and sudden burst of violence feel consequential. The real hook is watching Lee and Jung Woo-sung circle each other with equal parts duty, suspicion, and bruised pride, turning a spy-hunt into a pressure-cooker drama about loyalty and survival. It’s not for the squeamish—the violence and interrogation scenes can be brutal—but if you like political thrillers that move like a bullet and keep you guessing, this one is absolutely worth the ride.

Hunt is clearly aiming for a slick, old-school Cold War paranoia thriller with big star power, political urgency, and action that doesn’t pull its punches. The problem is it’s so busy stacking twists, double-crosses, and shifting loyalties that the story can start to feel like homework, and the characters sometimes become chess pieces instead of people you fully understand. If you love dense spy plots and don’t mind rewinding mentally to keep track, you’ll probably have a great time because the pacing is muscular and the set pieces are sharp. If you’re looking for clean clarity, deeper emotional grounding, or a mystery that plays fair without constant rug-pulls (and you’re sensitive to brutal torture and heavy violence), this one may leave you more exhausted than thrilled.
