Rampant (2018)

Rampant is the kind of historical action-horror that feels lavish and ferocious at the same time, dropping you into 17th-century Korea with candlelit palace intrigue on one side and blood-slick monster mayhem on the other. Director Kim Sung-hoon stages fights with a clean, muscular clarity—Hyun Bin’s prince moves through swordplay and chaos with the swagger of a classic adventure hero, while the camera savors the period textures and moonlit dread. The vibe is equal parts court thriller and survival nightmare, building to a second half that turns into a beautifully shot, full-throttle siege where every corridor and rooftop feels like an arena. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s real gore and relentless violence—but if you want a stylish, propulsive ride that treats its monsters and its politics with the same sharp teeth, this one delivers.

Rampant is clearly trying to mash up a grand Joseon court intrigue with a zombie outbreak, aiming for slick period action, political backstabbing, and monster mayhem in one package. When it locks into combat, it can be satisfyingly kinetic, with solid production design and a lead who sells the swashbuckling hero vibe. The problem is it often feels like two movies fighting for control: the first half can drag, the mythology and rules wobble, and the characters (especially the comic relief) aren’t deep enough to make the drama land. If you want tight horror tension or a fresh, coherent take on zombies, this may frustrate you—but if you’re happy with a glossy, violent, somewhat predictable genre blend, it’s an okay time-waster.
